BLOGPOST 7: SOMEONE I ADMIRE IN MY FIELD

I am going to write about a linguist specialized in Language Acquisition--ESL: Stephen Krashen. He is a professor of Linguistics who has taught at Linguistics and Education departments in the US. He received his PhD in 1972, and has been prolifically active in Linguistics Language Acquistion since then having published over 400 articles.

I admire him mostly for certain theories that he has focused on, maybe even invented or created:

The Acquisition-Learning Hypothesis: This looks at and contrasts acquisition (how babies learn language) and learning (how students in a class learn language). It has supported the idea that classrooms should include as much "acquisition-like" activity as possible to make the language process as close to acquistion as possible.

The Input Hypothesis: This says that language cannot be produced (people speaking) without sufficient input. Learners need to listen and hear things; they need a person (model or teacher) to give them input so that they can really use the language.

The Affective Filter Hypothesis: This says that we all have an emotional block/filter inside that prevents learning. If we're very nervous and tense--we don't learn. The language teacher needs to help learners feel more relaxed to be able to learn.

Stephen Krashen has been a very important contributor to advancements in the "Pedagogy or Methodology of Language Teaching."

  1. Wow it seems to me impressive, really the brain and the learning process are wonderful. I find it really interesting how emotions regulate what is learned.

  6. Hi teacher! I find the hypothesis of the affective filter very interesting, because in my experience it has happened to me that when faced with nervousness one does not learn, but if a teacher applies techniques to avoid this, it is a very good way to help us.

  8. Hi teacher! I didn't know Stephen Krashen and I regret it. I agree with all your theories, mainly with the affective filter hypothesis, because I feel that by being more relaxed one learns better.

  9. Hi teacher! I like people like you and Stephen Krashen, because you care a lot about teaching, researching about it, because it's not about monotonously going to class to teach, but really getting involved, day by day, in how through activities and words teach your students.✨✨
